Caffè Trieste was opened in 1956 by Giovanni Giotta, and is the oldest espresso bar on the west coast. Francis Ford Coppola, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Paul Kantner, Roy Mottini, and countless other legendary folks have found inspiration in those beans. It is the infamous caffeinated creative pulse deep in the heart of San Francisco.
Greetings from my daily hike, 13 flights of stairs to the tip of the tower. According to the architect Arthur Brown Jr, Coit Tower was not designed to resemble a fire hose. It is a legendary coincidence due to Lillie Coit and her support of the fire department.
I was asked by the North Beach and Chinatown business associations to create an illustration for a local billboard. Their goal is to establish unity between the three neighborhoods of Telegraph Hill, North Beach, and Chinatown. Nothing says unity to me like drawing hood handshakes and hugs up in the tiny apartment in Coit Tower.
