My mom and grandma always told me that I must learn how to balance things on my head as I walk. Thinking generally at a young age that this must be for traditional dances and that this is how women practice walking with poise and elegance.
Although, those two things may be true, what they were teaching me was that a Filipina woman must know BALANCE. We do everything and we have done everything. We are leaders, warriors, healers, child-bearers, chefs, priests, teachers, hunters, everything.
During the Spaniard rule, women were viewed as less than and incapable of amounting to any superior position. For women who had any position of power, that was revoked.
In America, the folks who believe women cannot amount to anything use the phrase "Putting women in their place." With the underlining tone, it dehumanizes us when in reality, THIS is our place. All these hats we wear is our place. All these things we do to sustain society, for you to live, for you to enjoy life... is our place.
